Branitz , Rogeńc in Lower Sorbian , is a district of the independent city of Cottbus . Located in the east of the city, it borders on the community of Neuhausen / Spree and the district of Spree-Neisse . With around 1400 inhabitants, Branitz is one of the smaller districts of the city. Until it was incorporated in 1993, Branitz existed as an independent municipality.

The district is known for the Branitzer Park with its castle.

geography

Branitz is located east of the Spree on an alluvial sand fan of the Cottbus sand plate . In the Branitz area, the fan is interspersed with various still waters. In the middle of the 19th century, Hermann von Pückler-Muskau transformed part of the barren sandy landscape into the Branitzer Park . Since it was bought by the city of Cottbus in 1933, the Branitzer Park has been largely on the outskirts of the neighboring district of Sandow .

- First documentary mention, September 8, 1449

The Slavic name Branicz loud's Brandenburg Namenbuch means , place where people live a man named Bran . The Lower Sorbian place name Rogeńc refers either to the field name with the meaning horn, corner , in a figurative sense, place on a sharp bend in the Spree , or to the name Bronici .

Branitz under changing aristocratic rule

In the middle of the 15th century Branitz was owned by the brothers Heinz and Hans von Kracht from the old noble family von Kracht. Via the von Werdeck family, the place came to the von Köckritz family in 1510 , to the von Zabeltitz family in 1519 and, after 1608, to Hans Sigismund von Muschen from the von Mosch family . On October 6, 1696, the Branitz estate acquired imperial count August Sylvius von Pückler (1657–1742), Baron von Groditz, Lord of Schedlau and other goods in Silesia. He was followed by Erdmann Graf von Pückler (1687–1742), August Heinrich Graf von Pückler (1720–1810), the builder of Branitz Castle, and Hermann von Pückler-Muskau (1785–1871), who was awarded the title of prince in 1822. After he had to sell the rulership of Muskau on account of debt , he began work on Branitzer Park on his father's property in 1846, at the age of 60. He was followed by Heinrich Graf von Pückler, who died in 1921, and August Graf von Pückler (1864–1937). Before the goods came to the city of Cottbus, Heinrich Graf von Pückler (died in 1944) was the last noble owner.

Incorporation

On December 6, 1993 Branitz was incorporated into the independent city of Cottbus.
