The Braunschweigische Landesverein was founded on December 15, 1908 as the "Landesverein für Heimatschutz im Duchtum Braunschweig" . The initiator was Duke Johann Albrecht zu Mecklenburg ; he also took over the patronage. The aims of the association when it was founded: Protection of the local flora and fauna, support for the preservation of monuments, preservation and promotion of folk art, preservation and promotion of the sense of home, protection and care of the landscape and townscape, preservation of local names, names of places, streets and fields, Preservation of the Low German language.

history

The trigger for the founding of the association was the change in the local flora and fauna and the rural properties due to industrialization in the second half of the 19th century. In this way, the cultural landscape that had grown at that time was also influenced by strong interventions.

The " Deutsche Bund Heimatschutz ", founded in Dresden in 1904, wanted to protect the German homeland in its natural and historical character from random changes. Heinrich Sohnrey , August Tecklenburg and Ernst Rudorff also fought for the protection of their homeland in what is now Lower Saxony . As a result, the forerunner of the Lower Saxony Heimatbund , the Lower Saxony Committee for Homeland Security , was founded in 1905 .

In Braunschweig the impetus to found an association for homeland security came from Duke Johann Albrecht zu Mecklenburg (1857-1920), who in 1907 had taken over the reign of the Duchy of Braunschweig . He knew the homeland security movement from Mecklenburg and had campaigned for a competition there for the development of designs for small-scale farms. The building management refused to transfer these drafts to the Braunschweigische Land because the Mecklenburg plans provided for the unification of residential and farm buildings under one roof, which was not to be expected of the Braunschweig farmers because of the stable haze that impaired the living space. Nevertheless, the regent sought a homeland security movement in Braunschweig, which was primarily to deal with the preservation of the traditional rural architecture. The school director Friedrich Koldewey from Bad Harzburg, on the other hand, strived for better consideration of local history and local history in the school curricula. The club ultimately strived for both and more.

The Duke and ministers were present at the founding meeting. The board elections resulted in: District Director Hugo Krüger (Wolfenbüttel) as chairman; Manor owner von Mackensen ( Astfeld ) as deputy chairman, school director Friedrich Koldewey ( Bad Harzburg ) as secretary, bank director Paul Walter ( Braunschweig ) as treasurer and the assessors Ludwig Haarmann (director of the building trade school, Holzminden ), house marshal von Klencke (Braunschweig), privy councilor Hans Pfeifer (Braunschweig), Georg Troje (surgeon, Braunschweig), privy councilor Paul Zimmermann (Wolfenbüttel).
