content

Secluded Kells Abbey in 8th century Ireland is an ancient walled monastery. This is the home of 12 year old Brendan, whose uncle Cellach is the abbot of the monastery. The abbot is obsessed with building a mighty protective wall to protect his monastery from raiding Vikings. One day the famous illuminator Aidan arrives with his cat Pangur Bán, with the unfinished book by Iona. To help Aidan complete the book, Brendan must find vegetable gall for the ink in the forest . The forest was actually forbidden to him by his uncle, but Brendan leaves anyway. There he meets the forest spirit Aisling, who helps him with his task. When Cellach learns of this, he forbids Brendan to leave the monastery again.

But Brendan continues to help Aidan with his work. He cannot complete the book because he lacks the eye of Columban von Iona , a special lens. His predecessor got this from the god Cromm Cruach , and so Brendan goes back into the forest to get a new eye. However, he is discovered, taken to Cellach and finally imprisoned for his disobedience. Pangur Bán wants to help him and gets Aisling out of the forest; together they free Brendan. But Aisling advises him not to visit the god, as he has already killed many of their kind and could kill them both. But because the new eye is needed to complete the book, she finally agrees. When they reach Cromm Cruach, Brendan has to fight him and can defeat him with cunning. Aisling, initially believed dead, survives but disappears, and Brendan returns to the monastery with the new eye.

But soon the monastery is invaded by the Vikings. Aidan and Brendan escape, but are caught in the forest by the Vikings. At this moment Aisling comes to their aid, in the form of a white wolf and with black wolves in their wake. They kill the Vikings and then disappear back into the forest. The two monks are now traveling through the country together to finish the book. After Aidan's death, Brendan takes over this task entirely. As an adult, he returned to Kells and was able to show the aged Cellach the now completed Book of Kells .

reception

The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category best animated feature film in 2010 . In 2009 there was already a nomination for the European Film Award, category best animated film . At the box office, the film grossed a total of $ 700,000.

The Variety praises the refreshing style of the film, which is reminiscent of older animation films, and the artistic influences from Ireland are well incorporated. Despite the fairly simple, flat representations with no spatial depth, the film is on a high technical level. The story is particularly suitable for children up to ten years of age, despite some very scary scenes, but also entertaining for their parents. The Seattle Times writes of a “breathtaking mixture of Celtic mythology and creative animation.” The images, sometimes elaborate and epic, showed a similarly well-known story in a refreshingly new way. Animation World Network describes the work as a "wonderful film experiment" with a kind of modern Celtic style and a well-told, heartwarming and exciting story. The film portal film-rezensions.de concluded with the conclusion that The Kells Secret was "an example of how Europe can still produce beautiful cartoons - if you let it."
