The Brenta (often feminine in German-language publications; German name no longer in use: Brandau) is a 174 km long river in northern Italy . It rises southeast of Trento from the outflows of the lakes Caldonazzo and Levico, which meet at Levico Terme , and flows through the Suganer Valley first in an easterly direction and then from Primolano in a southerly direction. From here the valley narrows to the so-called Canale di Brenta. The Brenta leaves the Southern Limestone Alps at Bassano del Grappa and continues its course through the Venetian lowlands of the Po Valley . Between Bassano and shortly before Padua, the course of the river with its meanders and gravel banks is largely preserved.
The alluvial material that was washed into the Venice lagoon prompted Venice in the 16th century to dig a new river bed in the lower Brenta, which flows into the Adriatic south of Chioggia . The old river bed, with a few locks , was preserved as an important inland waterway into the interior. Accompanied by numerous villas on the banks as early as the 17th and 18th centuries, the Brenta Canal was a frequented route between Padua and Venice .
In Bassano del Grappa the river is crossed by the Ponte Vecchio , which is also called Ponte degli Alpini after the Italian mountain hunters . The covered wooden bridge was both built according to Palladio's plans in 1569 and rebuilt after each destruction.
On the banks of the Brenta in 899 the Magyars (Hungarians) under Prince Árpád defeated the troops of the national king Berengar I of Friuli.
