Brian Auger (born July 18, 1939 in London ) is a British fusion and rock organist. Auger is one of the most important fusion organists in popular music. His main instrument is the Hammond B3 organ , which he does not play in a Leslie cabinet as is usual , but instead amplifies it directly and uses the C3 vibrato ; He also plays Fender Rhodes e-piano (or corresponding sounds), piano and synthesizer .

Live and act

Auger played the piano at an early age; as a teenager he appeared in clubs in London. In 1962 he formed his Brian Auger Trio with Rick Laird and drummer Phil Kinorra as an initially pure jazz combo . In 1965 he founded the group The Steampacket with Rod Stewart , Julie Driscoll and John Baldry . After Rod Stewart and John Baldry left the group, Auger formed the group Trinity with Julie Driscoll . With this line-up, the band had several single hits (Road To Cairo, This Wheel's on Fire, Season Of The Witch) and brought out the highly regarded double album "Streetnoise" (1969).

After Driscoll had left Trinity in 1969, Auger re-occupied the group (with Gary Boyle ), but he could no longer build on the success of the late 1960s and dissolved Trinity in 1970. Even with his band, Oblivion Express , which he then founded , Auger initially had no great success. Since the album "Closer to It" (1973), which made it into the charts, the group style has consolidated into a groove- emphasized mixture of rhythmic elements from R&B and funk and harmonic and melodic elements from jazz. Brian Auger has also performed with Klaus Doldinger , Alexis Korner , Pete York , Eric Burdon and other greats in popular music.

In 1974 Auger moved to the USA , where he continued to record albums. In the USA he got in contact with Julie Tippetts-Driscoll again. With her, Auger recorded the album "Encore" in 1977. The Washington Post wrote, "This album is an essential part of any jazz fusion library!" In 1981 he recorded the album "Olympic Rock & Blues Circus" with Chris Farlowe , Pete York and John Marshall . This album has been in the direct interface added methods (direct to disk). In 1985 he took part in a new edition of the Spencer Davis Group . In the same year, the album Steaming was released , which Auger had recorded in Freiburg im Breisgau with Colin Hodgkinson and Pete York. In 1987 he appeared at the Montreux Festival together with Phil Carmen . In 1989 he worked as musical director, arranger and composer for the third season of the television series " Super Drumming ". From 1990 Auger went on tour with Eric Burdon .

Up to an advanced age he gives concerts and publishes CDs with his son Karma on drums and daughter Savannah Grace as a singer in his band Oblivion Express (initially called "New Oblivion" to distinguish it from the old band). The newly formed band has now released several albums and toured several times in the US and Europe. In the last few years singer and guitarist Alex Ligertwood , who played for Oblivion Express in the 1970s , has also been there.

Prizes and awards

In November 2007 Brian Auger received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the director of the Temecula International Jazz Festival .
