Brigitte Falkenburg

Brigitte Falkenburg (born April 4, 1953 in Nuremberg ) is a German philosopher . From 1997 to 2019 she was professor for theoretical philosophy with a focus on philosophy of science and technology at the TU Dortmund .

academic career

After studying physics and philosophy in Erlangen , Berlin , Bielefeld and Heidelberg , with degree in physics in 1978 ( TU Berlin ), Falkenburg in 1985 at the University of Bielefeld for Dr. phil. with a thesis on natural philosophy ( Die Form der Materie. On the metaphysics of nature in Kant and Hegel ) and in 1986 in Heidelberg for Dr. rer. nat. PhD with a thesis on particle physics ( determination of nucleon structure functions from neutrino-iron scattering ).

From 1989 to 1993 Falkenburg was a research assistant at the philosophical seminar of the University of Heidelberg with Erhard Scheibe , and in 1992 she completed her (external) habilitation in Konstanz . From 1993 to 1997 she received a Heisenberg grant from the DFG and 1994/95 a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin . From October 1997 she was Professor of Philosophy at the TU Dortmund . From 2004 to 2012 she was also the spokesperson for the working group Philosophy in Physics ( AGPhil ) at the DPG .

In 2002 she won the Johann Joachim Becher Prize for her work “Whom does technology serve? An epistemological analysis of the ambivalences of technical progress ”. In 2012 she was accepted into the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts .

Her research includes topics from natural philosophy , philosophy of science and philosophy of physics as well as modern metaphysics , epistemology and philosophy of technology .
