Brooks Macek (born May 15, 1992 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a German - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Awtomobilist Yekaterinburg in the Continental Hockey League (KHL) since June 2019 and plays for the team in the center position.
Career
Junior time in Canada
Brooks Macek played from 2007 to 2008 for the Notre Dame Hounds in the lower class Canadian Junior League Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League and was able to win the championship. Throughout the league, he was third in the scorer ranking. For the 2008/09 season , Macek moved to the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League , who had selected him in the second round of the WHL Bantam Draft in 2007 in 43rd place. In his first year he reached the conference semifinals with his team. In the 2009/10 season , the Tri-City Americans came to the finals of the Ed Chynoweth Cup and were subject to the Calgary Hitmen . Macek also improved and scored 90 points in 93 games. After the season he was drawn in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings in the sixth round in 171st place. Halfway through his third season in the WHL, Macek was transferred to the Calgary Hitmen within the league in January 2011. With the reigning champion, however, he only achieved last place. A year later they reached the playoffs and were eliminated in the first round. In the 2012/13 season Macek was assistant captain of his team and set new personal bests with 38 goals and 94 points. With the Hitmen he came in the playoffs to the Conference finals, in which you were only defeated in the seventh decisive game of the Edmonton Oil Kings .
Change to the DEL
After completing his junior years, several clubs from Germany showed interest in Macek, as his German ancestors gave him the opportunity to take on German citizenship. On June 16, 2013 Macek signed a two-year contract with the Iserlohn Roosters from the German Ice Hockey League . At the Sauerland, he became a top performer in his first season and with 13 goals and 21 assists was instrumental in reaching tenth place and participating in the playoffs, in which he scored five goals himself and prepared another. Macek was able to convince with four goals, especially in the successful pre-playoffs against EHC Red Bull Munich . In the following season he increased his yield to a total of 17 goals and 22 assists, reached sixth place with the Roosters and thus the direct qualification for the playoffs. After the 2014/15 season he extended his contract with the Sauerland region for another year. In the following 2015/16 season , the Roosters played one of the most successful DEL main rounds in their history, which they were able to finish in third place in the table, with Macek and Nick Petersen being one of the team's two best goalscorers with 21 goals each.
For the 2016/17 season , Macek moved to the reigning champions EHC Red Bull Munich. In his first season for Munich he was able to defend the title with his team, where he was top scorer of the play-offs with 17 points , but had to leave the MVP title to his teammate Yannic Seidenberg . In the 2017/18 DEL season , alongside the best DEL goal setter Keith Aucoin , he was the most successful goalscorer in the main round with 26 goals and again won the German championship title with the Munich team.
Stations in North America and Russia
On June 12, 2018, the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League announced Macek's commitment. The German-Canadian received a one-year contract valid for both the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League . He did not appear in the NHL, but the striker played 81 games for the Chicago Wolves in the AHL, scoring 31 goals and preparing 35 more.
During the summer break of 2019, he accepted a contract offer from Awtomobilist Yekaterinburg from the Continental Hockey League .
International
When Germany Cup 2015 Macek made his debut for the German national team . He was also part of the German squad at the 2016 World Cup . Macek scored a total of three goals and gave an assist and reached the quarter-finals with his team. There they were eliminated against host Russia .
At the 2018 Winter Olympics , Macek was back in the DEB squad at a major international tournament after participating in the 2017 World Cup . There he won the silver medal with the team after a final defeat against Russia . On the way to the final, Macek scored two goals - including a goal in the semifinals against his country of birth.
Style of play
Macek is a talented striker who can be used as a center and winger. He has good game building skills and often appears as a scorer. He can read the game well and is effective in power play. Macek is considered a good skater who uses his speed on counterattacks and has a good work ethic. His defensive skills are average.
