description

Vegetative characteristics

Brunfelsia martiana is a shrub up to 1 meter high. It is only slightly branched, hairless, the knots are slightly gnarled, the bark is torn lengthways, dark reddish-brown in color, shiny and covered with cork pores . The leaves are scattered on the branches, they are tightly membrane-like to almost membranous, almost sessile, 10 to 25 centimeters long and 4 to 8 centimeters wide, mostly elongated, but sometimes also elliptical-elongated or elongated inverted-egg-shaped. Towards the front they are pointed, at the base they are broadly wedge-shaped to blunt. Both sides of the leaf are hairless, the upper side is dark green, shiny or matt. The underside is paler, sometimes shiny. The midrib is dark reddish-brown, eight to twelve pairs of straight leaf veins extend from it. The leaf stalks are 1 to 4 millimeters (rarely up to 12 millimeters) long, hairless, dark brown and become cracked and wrinkled with age.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences are terminal or in the upper leaf axils. They are hairless, the inflorescence axis is 2 to 10 millimeters (rarely up to 15 millimeters) long and bears one to seven flowers . One to three non-permanent bracts are formed per flower , these are 1 to 10 millimeters long, linear-lanceolate, concave and finely ciliate at the edge. The flower stalks are 3 to 6 millimeters (rarely up to 10 millimeters) long, slender and hairless.

The sepals are tubular to tubular-bell-shaped to form a 8 to 12 millimeter long and 3 to 8 millimeter diameter calyx. The calyx is rarely veined with streaks. The calyx teeth are 2 to 6 millimeters long, almost uniform, triangular-ovoid to ovate and lanceolate and tapering to the front. With a length of 20 to 24 millimeters, the corolla tube is about twice as long as the calyx, straight, cylindrical, 1 to 3 millimeters in diameter and inflated towards the front. The coronet measures 15 to 22 millimeters in diameter, is protruding and slightly wavy, the corolla lobes are 5 to 10 millimeters long, almost identical, elongated, inverted-egg-shaped and suddenly bent back at the lateral edges. At the top they are almost cut off round.

The stamens start in the upper half of the corolla tube, the stamens are almost tongue-shaped, the upper pair is 4 millimeters, the lower pair 3 millimeters long. The anthers measure about 1 millimeter in diameter and are spherical to kidney-shaped. The top pair is a little smaller. The ovary is 2 millimeters long, obovate and carries a long about 15 millimeters, filamentary stylus . This is somewhat broader and curved at the tip and ends in a 1 millimeter long, slightly split scar , the upper half of which is slightly larger.

Fruits and seeds

Fruits and seeds are poorly known.

Occurrence and locations

The species is found in the Guiana , in the Brazilian states of Amazonas , Bahia , Maranhão and Pará .

Botanical history

The species was first described in 1974 by Timothy Charles Plowman . The type epithet honors Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius , who collected a specimen of the species between 1819, which was chosen as the type specimen . The holotype and several isotypes are kept in the Botanical State Collection in Munich .
