description

Vegetative characteristics

Brunfelsia undulata is a shrub or tree up to 6 m high with a relatively thin trunk. In cultivated plants, root shoots often form around the main stem , resulting in a large number of clones .

Relatively few leaves are formed, these are in groups of just a few leaves at the tips of the long, spindle-shaped branches on petioles about 0.6 cm long . The leaf blade is ovate-lanceolate, tapering at both ends and tapering somewhat. The leaf margin is almost entire. The length is 5.5 to 18 cm, the width 2 to 4.5 cm. The leaf surface is hairless. The young leaves are often purple in color due to anthocyanins .

Inflorescences and flowers

The flowers are usually single and terminal on wild-growing plants, cultivated forms often form clusters of flowers that are terminal on the upper branches. The flower stalks are very short. The light green to yellowish calyx is about 2 cm long, short and irregularly lobed, with glandular hairs on the outside. The crown is initially white and later becomes yellowish, the slightly curved crown tube is cylindrical and 7.5 to 9 cm long, the diameter is about 0.5 cm. The coronet has a diameter of about 6.5 cm, the five corolla lobes are rounded, 2.5 cm wide, their edge is strongly wavy. The stamens do not protrude beyond the corolla tube. The ovary is elongated, about half the length of the calyx. The stylus is slim, protrudes slightly over the corolla tube, the stigma is bilobed.

fruit

The fruits are capsule fruits .

Occurrence

The species is endemic to the north coast of Jamaica . The only known location of the species was destroyed by the construction of a cattle drive path.
