Bruno Müller-Oerlinghausen

Bruno Müller-Oerlinghausen (born March 7, 1936 in Berlin ) is a German specialist in pharmacology, toxicology and clinical pharmacology with a special focus on psychopharmacology . He is a professor emeritus at the Free University of Berlin .

Life

Müller-Oerlinghausen was born in Berlin as the son of the sculptor Berthold Müller-Oerlinghausen and his wife Emily, née Sturm. During the Second World War, the families moved from Berlin-Charlottenburg to Kressbronn on Lake Constance . After attending elementary school, in 1945 he first switched to the humanistic grammar school in Lindau on Lake Constance and, with the support of his mentor Hellmut Becker, later to theBirklehofeducational home in Hinterzarten in the Black Forest, where he graduated from high school in spring 1954.

Scientific career

First he studied chemistry in Göttingen, then switched to psychology and later to medicine. He continued his studies in Munich, Frankfurt am Main, Freiburg im Breisgau and Berlin. He passed the state examination on April 19, 1962, and received his license to practice medicine on December 31, 1964 after completing his medical assistantship. He began his dissertation on “Contribution to the problem of exhibitionism ” at the University of Freiburg. May 1965 graduated with a doctorate .

He then continued his education in the field of experimental pharmacology at the Institute for Pharmacology at the University of Göttingen. In 1969 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the influence of diabetes on hepatic detoxification processes in the field of pharmacology and toxicology, with Werner Creutzfeldt being the co-referee of his habilitation thesis entitled "Drug metabolism in diabetic animals". After completing his advanced training, he obtained the title of " Specialist in Pharmacology" on September 29, 1971 .

From 1969 to 1971 he worked for the Federal Republic of Germany as a development worker and pharmacological expert in Bangkok (Thailand), where he set up a laboratory for the investigation of traditional Thai medicine and phytotherapy .

From 1971 he received further clinical training in the psychiatric clinic of the Free University of Berlin under the direction of Hanfried Helmchen . In 1975 he received a professorship for clinical psychopharmacology at the Free University of Berlin. Since 1974 he has been head of the research group in this field and headed the Berlin Lithium Clinic. In 1991 he acquired the title of "Specialist in Clinical Pharmacology".

He retired on April 1, 2001 .

From 1975 to 2002 Müller-Oerlinghausen was editor of the journal Pharmacopsychiatry . In addition, he was co-editor of other scientific journals. Together with representatives of other independent critical drug bulletins, he works for the editorial team of the trade journal for laypeople Gute Pillen - Bad Pillen .

From 1985 to 1995, Müller-Oerlinghausen was chairman of the B3 processing commission at the Federal Health Office. He was co-founder and chairman of the international research group "International Group for the Study of Lithium Treated Patients" (IGSLI). He has written mainly on topics related to pharmacokinetics and the mechanism of action of psychotropic drugs. He is a full member and honorary member of the Medicines Commission of the German medical profession . He was also a member of the board of directors there for many years, as chairman in 1994, 1997, 2000 and 2003. Müller-Oerlinghausen has been a member of the Advisory Board for Drugs at Stiftung Warentest since 2011 .

He was interviewed by Christian Esser and Astrid Randerath in the documentary Das Pharmakartell (ZDF, Frontal21 , 2008) .

Private

Bruno Müller-Oerlinghausen appears regularly as a flute soloist and is the patron of the Mendelssohn Chamber Choir Berlin .

He is married, has two children and lives in Berlin and Kressbronn on Lake Constance .

Awards

For his contributions to medical education that awarded him the German Medical Association on March 9, 2006 with the Ernst von Bergmann plaque from. At the 110th German Doctors' Conference in 2007 in Münster (Westphalia), he was awarded the Paracelsus Medal for his successful professional work and outstanding scientific achievements .
