Breast center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A breast center is a department of a hospital or a network of departments from different hospitals, mammography screening units and resident doctors for the medical diagnosis and treatment of all diseases of the female - and rarely male - breast . Breast cancer enjoys particular attention here , as around every ninth woman in Germany will develop it in the course of her life. Various specialties such as gynecology , oncology , malignant hematology , radiology , pathology and psycho-oncology work together.

Breast centers in Germany are implementing the project of the German Cancer Society to introduce new care structures in oncology.

The EUSOMA (European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists, formerly European Society of Mastology) is committed to improving the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and also certifies breast centers according to their own criteria.

Certificates

Breast centers that have successfully passed the certification process of the German Cancer Society (DKG) and the German Society for Senology (DGS) receive the “Certified Breast Center” quality seal. In addition to technical requirements, the introduction of an externally recognized quality management system is specified. With the certification, the DKG and DGS are pursuing the goal of improving the care of oncological patients and enabling them in every phase and for every area of their disease to receive treatment based on high quality standards based on the current state of science. The certification of breast centers is not regulated by public law, however, but takes place in accordance with the requirements of the DKG and DGS, which are legally registered associations. The term “breast center” is not protected, however, and any clinic can use it without providing information about the quality of the offer.

For this purpose, the German Cancer Society, in cooperation with the German Society for Senology, has developed a catalog of requirements for breast centers, which, however, has not yet fully taken into account European guidelines (“EUSOMA” criteria for breast centers) and also requires the documentation of treatment results. These requirements, which z. B. also contain minimum quantities (150 primary cases per center, 50 per specialist), were summarized in a catalog “Technical requirements for breast centers” and checked in trial and pilot certifications at four breast centers in Germany. The EUSOMA certificate is awarded across Europe according to its own criteria. Centers that meet the EUSOMA criteria first receive the "Initial Certification" after verification. Full certification can be applied for after five years if the relevant audit data is available.

In the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia , the responsible Ministry of Health started its own program in 2005 with the aim of improving the treatment of women and men with breast cancer. For this purpose, a certification model has been developed that the breast centers designated by hospital planning must implement. 51 breast centers with 93 surgical sites were appointed. The Ministry has commissioned ÄKzert, the certification body of the Westphalia-Lippe Medical Association, to carry out the certification . In 2010, 47 of the centers were certified. The requirements in NRW are almost identical to those of the German Cancer Society. However, they include the review of the quality management system. As shown above, this must be proven separately at the Cancer Society.

Number of certified breast centers in Germany

In 2011, with 255 certified breast centers in Germany, there was almost nationwide care that more than 50 percent of those newly diagnosed with breast cancer take advantage of. However, the distribution of breast cancer centers in the federal states is very different. In 2011, only 4 centers were certified in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and 54 in Baden-Württemberg . There are large differences in relation to the population, i.e. a different number of women have to be cared for in each breast cancer center (see figure and table, as of January 2009).

According to the stricter European EUSOMA criteria, only one breast center in Germany was certified by 2016, the Hamburg Mammazentrum at the Jerusalem Hospital . Another breast center in Germany was in the certification process at the end of 2016, the Oldenburg Breast Center at the Pius Hospital in Oldenburg .

Certified breast centers in Europe

In addition to the only German center, five facilities in Belgium , five in Switzerland , thirteen in Italy , as well as one breast center each in the Netherlands and Portugal received the “Certification” from EUSOMA by 2016.

According to the criteria of the German Cancer Society and the German Society for Senology, two Austrian ( Linz ) and two Swiss centers ( Lucerne , Baden ) and two Italian breast cancer centers ( Meran , Brixen ) have been certified.
