The BUCH WIEN is a four-day international book fair in Vienna that takes place annually in November on the grounds of Messe Wien in Hall D. A total of around 400 events will take place as part of “Buch Wien”. Since 2014, BUCH WIEN has started with the “Long Night of Books” on the evening before the fair.

General

Readings, autograph sessions, discussions and new publications from all genres - fiction and crime novels, cookery and non-fiction books, world literature - are part of the program. The children and youth program includes workshops, readings and discussions on different topics, such as comics, classic media and social media and newspaper production. The fair is organized by Literatur- und Contentmarketing Ges.mbH, owned by the Main Association of the Austrian Book Trade (HVB).

With the introduction of the Book Fair in 2008, there will be the newly created reading festival week , which is supported by the City of Vienna and the Federal Ministry of Education . As part of this reading festival week, readings, discussions with authors, book signings and discussion events take place at venues all over Vienna.

History and statistics

The book fair has existed in its current form since 2008 and replaced the book week , which was held in the Vienna City Hall from 1948 with free entry . BUCH WIEN lasts four days and can be visited with a valid ticket.

Federal President Heinz Fischer opened the first trade fair , had around 21,600 visitors and thus only around a third of visitors compared to the previous event in the town hall. There were 271 exhibitors from 14 countries presenting around 500 publishers and 6 stages. Together with the reading festival week , 31,100 people interested in literature were mobilized. At the second fair in 2009 there were 228 exhibitors from eleven countries with 25,042 visitors. Together with the reading festival week , there were 34,500 visitors.

At the 10th anniversary in 2017, a new audience record was set with 48,500 visitors. There were a total of 451 events with 381 authors and 350 exhibitors from 20 nations, who had 8,000 square meters of exhibition space.

In 2018 the exhibition area was increased to 11,000 m². There were 51,000 visitors, the number of exhibitors was 370, and over 400 events were organized.

The twelfth Book Fair 2019 had 55,000 visitors, which again set a new record. The area was expanded by 1,000m² to 12,000m². A total of 385 exhibitors from 25 nations presented their publishers and institutions. 575 authors and contributors were involved in over 500 events over five days at the fair and at 35 locations in Vienna.

Long night of books

The first Long Night of Books took place in 2014 and the Book Fair has opened since then. The exhibition hall opens its doors on Wednesday evenings and invites reading enthusiasts to a series of exciting and entertaining events, including a concert, numerous readings and book signing sessions and a quiz for the public. The opening speech is a highlight and serves as the start of the book fair.
