The Bugatti Type 13 was the first vehicle to bear the Bugatti name . Ettore Bugatti had previously developed various vehicles for manufacturers such as Prinetti & Stucchi and Deutz , which he referred to as types 1 to 12. Production of the Type 13 began when the company was founded in 1910 and lasted until 1920. During this time, a total of 435 vehicles were produced. Most road vehicles had an engine with two valves per cylinder; five vehicles, on the other hand, were equipped with four-valve engines, making the Type 13 one of the first cars with four-valve technology. The Type 13 became known as “pur-sang” (“thoroughbred”).

After the First World War , the car with multi-valve engines continued to be produced and made the brand famous. The production of the "Brescia Tourer" brought economic success.

Prewar type 13

When Bugatti began working in its new plant in Molsheim, it improved its light, shaft-driven design into a Type 13 racing car. This included drilling the engine to a total of 1.4 liters (1368 cm³). Bugatti's four-valve technology, which was one of the first of its kind, was a major step forward. The use of a dual Zenith - carburettor brought a power boost to 30  hp (22  kW ) at 4500 / min, more (kg 300) than adequate for the lightweight. The racing car was fitted with leaf springs all around and had a wheelbase of around 2 m (79 inches).

The new company produced five vehicles in 1910 and competed in the 1911 French Grand Prix in Le Mans as a blatant outsider because of its small size. During the race, the Type 13 showed its true strength and finished the race in second place after seven hours.

The First World War forced Ettore Bugatti to stop production in this region. He took two complete vehicles to Milan for the duration of the war . He had the parts of three other Bugattis Type 13s buried near his factory. After the war, Ettore Bugatti returned from Milan and made five vehicles for racing using the remaining parts.

Post war type 13

The VIII Coupe des Voiturettes at Le Mans was the only French racing event in 1920 and Bugatti entered with the two complete cars that he had brought back from Milan and one more vehicle from the remaining buried parts. Ernest Friederich won and Pierre de Vizcaya was disqualified for breaking the rules.

The Bugatti Type 13 was unbeatable in its time. At the I Gran Premio delle Vetturette on the Circuito di Montichiari near Brescia in 1921 the Type 13 with the drivers Friederich, de Vizcaya, Michele Baccoli and Piero Marco took the first four places. Thanks to these great successes, orders were not long in coming. Based on these victories, all subsequent four-valve Bugatti models were nicknamed Brescia .

These Bugatti models were the only ones where the carburetor was on the left side of the engine and the exhaust was on the right. From 1926 on, the models were fitted with front brakes.
