The Federation for Social Defense (BSV) e. V. is a non-profit association that was founded in 1989 and emerged from the peace movement and is based in Minden . The non-governmental organization promotes the establishment of the concept of social defense instead of military conflicts and is committed to civil conflict management at home and abroad.

Understanding of Social Defense

The association defines social defense as “defending the institutions and values ​​of civil society by nonviolent means. Defense thus means the preservation of life and the opportunities for social change and resistance to oppression and exploitation, military violence and human rights violations here and elsewhere. The aim of those who advocate social defense in this sense as a new method of settling even 'large-scale' conflicts is a coexistence of peoples and nations in social justice and mutual respect. "

Fields of work

The work areas pacifism and military criticism, peace building and nonviolent intervention were quickly added to the original topic of social defense. The focal points and topics beyond that are worked on in working groups. The working groups of the FSIO include an AG Gender and Peace and an AG Civil Peacekeeping.

The Federation for Social Defense is a registered association with a seven-person honorary board. The full-time managing director is Christine Schweitzer . The office is in Minden / Westphalia.

Activities and current projects

In the area of ​​peace education, the BSV has, among other things, organized project days on the topic of "Development needs peace" and trained mediators in schools. He deals with ongoing conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and the war in Syria and is a co-sponsor of the campaign "Stop the cycle of violence in Turkey". Current projects are the peace education project Think Peace, the dissemination of the No Blame Approach against bullying in cooperation with the Fairaend association and the project "LOVE-Storm - Together against hatred on the Internet", which is about working against Hatespeech on the Internet. In addition, the FSIO continuously supports civil rights groups in Turkey and Belarus (human rights protection).

The association regularly holds conferences and technical discussions and publishes information materials such as newsletters, circulars, discussion and background papers and occasionally books.

Networking

The BSV is a member of the Civil Peace Service Forum , the Civil Conflict Management Platform and the Nonviolent Peaceforce . The organization is also a member (section) of War Resisters' International and belongs to the Cooperation for Peace .

Well-known founding chairmen of the BSV were Petra Kelly and Theodor Ebert , later chairmen among others Roland Vogt , Konrad Tempel , Barbara Müller and Ute Finckh-Krämer .
