The Bundeswehr Command USA and Canada ( BwKdo USA / CAN ), ( English : German Armed Forces Command, United States and Canada) is based in Reston , Virginia. It is the highest German joint command on the North American continent and exercises command of the German soldiers stationed there. Exceptions to this are the Air Force personnel who report directly to the Air Force Command and the military attaché staff in Washington DC (USA) and Ottawa ( Canada ).

Within the Org area of the armed forces base , the BwKdo USA / CAN reports directly to the armed forces office . The BwKdo USA / CAN was set up on September 1, 1993. The agency largely emerged from its predecessor, the “German Military Plenipotentiary USA / CAN”. This facility was originally located at 4000 Brandywine St., Washington DC. From a geographical point of view, the BwKdo USA / CAN is the largest joint armed forces command of the Bundeswehr outside of German territory. It guides the subordinate soldiers and civil servants who are distributed across more than 40 different duty stations in North America. In cooperation with the military attaché staff in Washington DC and Ottawa, it acts as an intermediary in the context of German-American and German-Canadian cooperation.

tasks

The main task of the commander is the uniform, joint armed forces command and maintenance of the personnel and material readiness for action of all German soldiers subordinate to him in North America.

The BwKdo USA / CAN is still responsible for the logistical supply of the subordinate area as well as the provision and operation of an IT and telecommunications infrastructure according to German standards in order to ensure the connection on the North American continent and the connection to Germany. Thus, the BwKdo USA / CAN guarantor for the dislocated departments and connect commands can fulfill their diverse jobs and training missions of the Bundeswehr are optimally supported.

German soldiers take part in training courses for the American and Canadian armed forces , carry out liaison tasks, are deployed in exchanges in units, associations and on ships or provide the German shares for NATO or other international headquarters .

The connecting elements, which are subordinate to the Bundeswehr Command USA / CAN, are technically subordinate to the most varied of responsible command commands, skill commands or departments in the Federal Ministry of Defense.

The marine component of the BwKdo USA / CAN consists of a German Navy Office and two program offices and is the connecting element and interface between the German Navy , the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) and the US Navy .

The tasks of the Traffic and Transport Department of the BwKdo USA / CAN (V / T), stationed at Washington Dulles International Airport , include the responsible planning, processing, controlling, handling and monitoring of all logistical transports of the Bundeswehr in the USA and Canada as well as to Germany . This includes not only the numerous purely logistical material transports, but also to a large extent the relocation of entire military units as part of exercise projects.

The focus is on the preparation and implementation of imports and exports of defense material. All activities are subject to strict adherence to and observance of US customs regulations (compliance).
