Ship type Schnigge

The Bunte Kuh was probably a Schnigge built in Flanders , which, as one of the command ships of the Hanseatic fleet, led the attack on the pirate Klaus Störtebeker in 1401 .

history

In order to secure maritime trade with England and Holland from pirate attacks, the city of Hamburg financed the merchants Simon von Utrecht and Hermann Nyenkerken two Schniggen including weapons and seamen. One of the ships, the Bunte Kuh , was entrusted to Hermann Nyenkerken, and the second, whose name has not been handed down, to Simon of Utrecht, who had moved from Flanders to the Hanseatic city. The light cogs could be rowed and were ideally suited for hunting pirates, as they were superior to the large trading cogs because of their speed and agility. From the year 1400 it served to persecute and combat the vitality brothers Störtebekers and Gödeke Michels ', who threatened the sea trade in the North Sea with several ships, one of which was named Seetiger . Contrary to the legend about Simon von Utrecht, the colorful cow was commanded by Hermann Nyenkerken. The Bunte Kuh was accompanied by a fleet of armed merchant ships peace ships called, led by the Hamburg councilors Nicholas Schocke and Hermann Lange. Störtebeker was finally able to be placed in front of Heligoland . The pirates were defeated and transported to Hamburg on the Bunter Kuh , where Störtebeker and others were beheaded in 1401 on the Grasbrook outside the city gates.

Ship type

The name ( colorful ko ), skipper and the cost of purchase and maintenance of the historic vehicle are no longer known . The city's expenditure on this was noted in Hamburg's treasury books for several years. Its height allows the conclusion that the ship was a Schnigge, as the cost of building and maintaining a cog would have been more than twice as high. The incorrect classification of the Bunte Kuh as a cog and the attribution of the ship to Simon von Utrecht probably go back to the grave slab of Simons von Utrecht, which was renewed in the 17th century and which was provided with an incorrect inscription of praise.

aftermath

Despite the lack of contemporary image sources, there are numerous models and illustrations of the colorful cow from later times. Usually the ship was depicted as a type of ship similar to a cog. There are models of the colorful cow in the Hamburg Ratskeller and in the Museum of Hamburg History .
