history

The castle was probably built around the year 1300 by the administrators of the monastery to protect the monastery of All Saints . In 1319 the castle came into the possession of the bishops of Strasbourg , they used it as an administrative building. The buildings of the complex were renovated in 1574 and served as the seat of a bailiff . The castle then slowly fell into disrepair, and in 1605 it is described as “neglected”. In a big fire in 1615, the castle and the town of Oppenau were destroyed by flames, later a castle-like building was built in the area of the ruins, which is now privately owned.

The castle complex was a rectangular building with a round, elongated residential tower , of which remains are still preserved, surrounded by two large neck ditches , which are now built over by houses.
