The castle Lützelhardt (fr. Château de Lutzelhardt ) is a medieval castle ruins west of Obersteinbach in Alsace . It is a rock castle and is 330 meters above sea level. The ruin is not to be confused with the Lützelhard Castle of the same name near Seelbach in the Black Forest.

The outer and main castle are located on a 20 meter high, 60 × 10 meter large rock plateau. The basement, cistern , remains of the keep and the residential buildings have been preserved.
history
Lützelhardt Castle was probably built around 1200 by the bailiffs of Wasselnheim . The first documentary mention is dated to the year 1250. In 1297 the castle became Vogteiburg of the Duke of Lorraine. Nevertheless, in 1363 it was sold piece by piece to Heinrich von Fleckenstein , and in 1395 a whole quarter of the castle for 500 guilders to Count Philipp von Nassau-Saarbrücken . Two years later, in 1397, Lützelhardt Castle was "burned" by the residents of Strasbourg . Another part was assigned to Wirich Puller von Hohenburg in 1450 . In 1462 the castle was besieged for a day and a half by the city of Weißenburg and finally stormed to arrest three ignobles . Finally, in 1538, the entire castle had to be ceded to Count Jakob von Zweibrücken-Bitsch . After the Bitscher lineage died out, the castle fell to the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg in 1550 . The castle was described as a ruin as early as 1606, and it was probably completely destroyed in the Thirty Years' War . The former Vogteiburg of Lorraine, which had become unusable, then fell to the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1638 . Today the castle is owned by the French state. It is located in the Adelsberg-Lutzelhardt natural forest reserve .
