Skalka Castle

Skalka Castle was built in the early 14th century. The first proven owner was Petr von Skalka between 1357 and 1360. In 1418, Skalken came to Hans von Sullowitz and remained in the possession of the noble family Cappleri de Sulewicz ( Kaplíř ze Sulevic in Czech ) until 1540 . Jan von Vřesovice owned Skalka between 1540 and 1544, followed by Johann Kaplirz von Kostial . In 1578 the rule came through marriage to Adam Hrzan von Harasov . In 1639 the Swedes burned Skalka; the castle was not rebuilt later either.

At the end of the 17th century, Jan Hrzán von Harras had a baroque castle built at the foot of the castle rock according to plans by Antonio della Porta . The building material was obtained from the decaying castle, so that today, apart from the picturesque keep, which is not accessible, no other remains of the castle complex are preserved. Inside the tower, which last served as a hunger tower, inscriptions from the 17th century by prisoners have been found.

In 1718 Anna Putz zu Adlersthurn on Dlaschkowitz and Podseditz became the owner of the Skalken estate, which united the estate. After all, from 1796 until the land reform of 1923, the rule belonged to the Counts of Schönborn , who lived in the castle until 1945. In January of the same year, the future Archbishop of Vienna and Cardinal Christoph Schönborn was born in the palace.

After the expropriation of the Schönborns, the castle served as a storage facility for the Litoměřice State Regional Archives from 1945 . In 1959 some repairs were made to the building. The castle has been owned by the Vlastislav Municipality since 2001. After repair work has been carried out, the second floor can be used for exhibitions and cultural events. The ground floor and first floor are in poor structural condition; security measures will continue to be carried out on the building fabric. The interior of the castle has not been preserved.

The exhibition is currently presenting works by painters and photographers on the landscape of the Bohemian Central Uplands. Another exposition is devoted to local history and the Kaplíř von Sulevice family. For this purpose, Elfriede Kaplirz zu Sulewicz, who lives in Germany, made copies of archival documents and documents available.

A linden tree was planted at the castle in 2001 for the poet Svatopluk Čech , who wrote parts of his work In the shadow of the linden tree in the Skalken castle .
