COVID-19 pandemic in the Tirschenreuth district

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The COVID-19 pandemic occurs in the district of Tirschenreuth in Bavaria since 11 March 2020 at relatively high number of cases (infections and deaths) as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic in appearance. It has the highest number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bavaria and Germany .

The COVID-19 infections have spread rapidly in the district since March 11, 2020. According to data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the number of infections in the Tirschenreuth district was already among the highest in Germany at the end of March 2020 , both in absolute terms and as measured by the number of infections per 100,000 inhabitants. According to the RKI, the most COVID-19 cases across Bavaria occurred in the Tirschenreuth district up to April 4, 2020, with over 700 infected people and 39 deaths.

The total of 1138 confirmed COVID-19 infections by June 24, 2020 corresponded to an incidence of 1569.6 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the 72,500 residents of the district .

background

The COVID-19 pandemic began in Wuhan , Hubei Province , People's Republic of China in December 2019 . It affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Course and measures

The first three COVID-19 infections were confirmed in the Tirschenreuth district on March 11, 2020. It is believed that an event, the strong beer festival of the Burschenverein in Mitterteich, led to the rapid spread of the virus.

On March 17, 2020, the district office of the Tirschenreuth district recommended that the population reduce all social contacts to a minimum with immediate effect, as the risk of contracting the corona virus is currently extremely high. On March 18, 2020, it imposed Germany's first curfew due to "Corona" in the Mitterteich urban area . This measure due to the virus outbreak was the first in Germany and initially applied until the beginning of April. The house could only be left for work, shopping, visits to the doctor or to help the needy. Failure to comply could result in fines or imprisonment. At the beginning of the curfew in Mitterteich, the Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann paid a visit to the district office. He was informed by the district administrator and the responsible emergency services. Herrmann then described the curfew as an “absolutely correct decision!” The Tirschenreuth district office brokered offers of help for the people affected in quarantine as well as for senior citizens, for example neighborhood help and shopping services.

On March 20, 2020, the first COVID-19-related death was reported in the Tirschenreuth district. On March 25, 2020, a public appeal for donations was launched due to the shortage of protective equipment, especially protective masks. All companies as well as private households should donate appropriate material so that, for example, the staff in the clinics, nursing homes, care services and the emergency services of the district can protect themselves adequately.

In a press conference on March 30, 2020, Prime Minister Markus Söder announced that in the Tirschenreuth district and three other particularly affected districts, a “mask and protection obligation” will apply in all old people's homes from now on.

By the beginning of April 2020, 579 people in the Tirschenreuth district had already been infected with the corona virus. The focus was still in the city of Mitterteich with 140 cases. Since "the city of Mitterteich is still in a very dynamic and serious situation with a sharp increase in the number of cases since the general decree 'curfew' 'was issued on March 18, the curfew for the Mitterteich city area was extended to and including April 9, 2020. The curfew was in effect up to and including April 2, 2020.

On April 3, 2020, District Administrator Wolfgang Lippert turned to doctors with a public appeal . Due to the high number of cases, doctors are urgently needed to help the district health department to cope with the corona crisis in the district.

Since the infection rate in the particularly affected urban area of Mitterteich no longer showed any significant differences compared to the rest of the district, an early lifting of the ordered curfew for April 7, 2020 was announced. This was decided at a meeting of the civil protection crisis team. Nevertheless, citizens are still urged to reduce social contacts to an absolutely necessary minimum.

The Tirschenreuth district received help from the Bundeswehr in April 2020 to cope with the crisis situation. Twelve retirement and nursing homes in the district are supported by 28 soldiers from the Bundeswehr. They come from Logistics Battalion 472 from Kümmersbruck.

The President of the German Red Cross , Gerda Hasselfeldt , obtained an up-to-date picture of the situation in the Tirschenreuth district on May 22, 2020. At a press conference with DRK President Hasselfeldt, BRK President Theo Zellner and BRK State Managing Director Leonhard Stark as well as Bundeswehr General Doctor Bruno Most , the high-caliber squad said that the Tirschenreuth district could also learn for the future, as the corona virus here is worse than it is Rest of the republic occurred.

By June 24, 2020, 1138 COVID-19 cases had been reported in the Tirschenreuth district (two cases fewer than before, due to a double / incorrect recording). Up to this day, 122 people had died in a circle of SARS-CoV-2 and 138 people had died of and with SARS-CoV-2 (according to LGL). 996 people had recovered.

On July 15, 2020, the District Office published the 29-page report by the Robert Koch Institute on the results of the investigation of the COVID-19 epidemic in the Tirschenreuth district in a press release. Germany-wide media quoted from the report and paid particular attention to the strong exposure at the beginning of the pandemic, when the Tirschenreuth district was at times the most active virus focus nationwide. According to the research report, 33 out of 98 respondents stated that they had either been on a skiing holiday in Austria or Italy shortly before , at a strong beer festival in the city of Mitterteich or at a second beer festival called "Zoigl" in Mitterteich. The RKI study therefore concluded: "An interaction of these three factors at a time when not a single case had been reported from the district seems likely to be the cause of the rapid spread of the new coronavirus in the city of Mitterteich and then in the entire district . "

statistics

The district office of Tirschenreuth confirmed the following COVID-19 case numbers in communications from the district office:

Confirmed cases of infection, cured persons and deaths (each cumulative) in the Tirschenreuth district
according to press releases from the district office

On April 18, 2020, information on the cause of death was available in about 91% of the reported SARS-CoV-2 deaths in the Tirschenreuth district, of which about 92% died from COVID-19 and 8% from another cause.

study

At the beginning of April 2020, the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder announced that researchers in the Tirschenreuth district would carry out a special COVID-19 study, in addition to and at the same time as an ongoing COVID-19 study in Munich , to determine the actual spread of the virus in to research the population. One must learn from the various infection processes, emphasized the infection and tropical medicine specialist Michael Hölscher . It is therefore important to gain knowledge in the Tirschenreuth district, which has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Ulrike Protzer , Director of the Institute for Virology at the Technical University of Munich , the experience of a study from the Heinsberg district in North Rhine-Westphalia, whose methods and findings are to be used for the procedure in the Tirschenreuth district, are incorporated.

The Corona study started on June 29, 2020 in the Tirschenreuth district. The long-term study is intended to provide information about the number of unreported cases of infected people in the district and document how the hitherto relatively unknown virus is developing. In addition, the scientists expect evidence of a possible protective effect of COVID-19-specific antibodies.

controversy

The boys' association Concordia invited to a strong beer festival in Mitterteich on March 7, 2020. In an ironically formulated advertisement from the Hösl private brewery , a “mass oral vaccination” with strong beer was recommended as the “ultimate protection against corona” . The event was attended by around 1200 to 1400 participants. A few days later, the first cases occurred in the district. The number of cases rose rapidly.

Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder said in a government statement that experts would suspect that the starting point for the many infections was that strong beer festival in the first week of March. Mitterteich's mayor, Roland Grillmeier, disagreed. Most of the sick had not attended the festival.

The brewery took a position: "The current discussions are causing us deep regret and great concern."

An investigation report by the Robert Koch Institute identified two other reasons for the spread. In addition to the strong beer festival and a second beer festival in Mitterteich (“Zoigl”, from February 14 to 20, 2020 and from March 3 to 7, 2020), ski holiday returnees from Austria and Italy were also attracted to the rapid initial spread of COVID-19 in the city and subsequently in the Tirschenreuth district. According to the report, the first known case in the district had the onset of the disease on February 17, 2020, another 11 cases also fell ill before the strong beer festival in Mitterteich. Commentators pointed out that there was still no explanation why the virus did not spread so quickly in other circles, where there were also skiers and festivals.
