The Ca 'da Mosto is a 13th-century palace in Venice and the oldest building on the Grand Canal . It is not far from the Rialto Bridge in the Cannaregio sestiere between Casa Zago and Palazzo Dolfin .

description

The Ca 'da Mosto is one of the few buildings with authentic Venetian-Byzantine structures on the Grand Canal and is an early example of a casa fondaco , i.e. a house that housed a merchant's apartment and warehouse. Above the windows of the piano nobile there are relief panels in the Byzantine style, so-called paterae . In the 16th century, another floor was added to the pre-Gothic piano nobile. The top floor dates from the 19th century. In the courtyard there is an open staircase .

history

The Da Mosto family was not the builder of the palace, but owned it from the middle of the 13th century until 1554. Then it passed into the possession of the Dolfin and Contarini families . It is in this building that the famous seafarer Alvise Da Mosto was supposedly born.

From 1661 until the early 19th century, the Albergo Al Lion Bianco was rented here, which at the time was the most famous hotel in Venice and also housed crowned heads. Joseph II , who had refused official accommodation by the republic, lived here in 1769 and 1775. In 1782 the Russian Crown Prince and later Tsar Paul I stayed in the house with his wife.

After the fall of the republic, ownership was unclear and the palace fell into disrepair. It was not until the 19th century that people remembered its history and a plaque was put up for Alvise Da Mosto.

The historically significant building, neglected for decades, was restored from 2010.
