Calogero La Piana SDB (born January 27, 1952 in Riesi , Province of Caltanissetta , Italy ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and emeritus Archbishop of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela .

biography

Calogero La Piana was born on January 27, 1952 in Riesi, a small town in the province of Caltanissetta on the south coast of Sicily . In 1973 he entered the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco as a novice and made temporary profession on September 12, 1974 . At the Istituto Teologico “San Tommaso” in Messina he studied philosophy from 1974 to 1976 and from 1978 to 1981 theology. From 1976–1978 he did an internship (Tirocinio pratico) at a Salesian boarding school in Palermo. He made his perpetual profession on September 14, 1980, and was ordained a priest on August 8, 1981 .

From 1981 to 1983 he continued his theology studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , where he received his doctorate in 1985 . From 1985 to 1999 Calogero La Piana worked at the Istituto Teologico “San Tommaso” in Messina. There he was primarily a lecturer in ecclesiology , theological anthropology and pastoral theology and liturgical and spiritual advice to the Salesian community assigned to the Theological Institute.

For six years Calogero La Piana was director of the Theological Institute. From 1989 to 1999 he was head of the Salesian community. From 1999 to 2002 he was inspector of the Ispettoria Salesiana Sicula, in which about 300 Salesians work in about 30 institutions such as schools, parishes, youth centers, boarding schools, recreation centers for drug addicts, etc.

At the end of 2002 Calogero La Piana was appointed bishop of the diocese of Mazara del Vallo , and he was consecrated as a bishop by Pope John Paul II on January 6, 2003 in St. Peter's Basilica . Almost three years later, on November 18, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela. The official inauguration took place on January 13, 2007 in the Cathedral of Messina . Other inaugurations took place in the concathedrals of the Archdiocese, on January 27, 2007 in Santa Maria Assunta in Santa Lucia del Mela, on January 31 in SS. Salvatore in Messina, and on March 5 in San Bartolomeo in Lipari. On June 29, 2007, Calogero La Piana received from Pope Benedict XVI in St. together with 46 other metropolitans the pallium .

On September 24, 2015, Pope Francis accepted his early resignation for health reasons.

In the Sicilian Episcopal Conference Calogero La Piana was delegate for migration.
