Cambodia [ ˌkæmˈ.bəʊ.diə ] ( listen ? / I ) ( German Cambodia ) is a song by Kim Wilde from 1981, written by her brother Ricky and her father Marty Wilde . Audio file / audio sample

Cambodia was released on November 2, 1981. It reached number one in Switzerland , France and Sweden and number two in the charts in Germany . In France the song became a million seller. The track was released as the first single from Kim Wilde 's hit album Select and her third top 10 hit.

The original song is 3:56 minutes long. From Cambodia different versions exist: There is an extended 7: 13-minute version ( Cambodia + Reprise ) as a 12-inch vinyl and some remixes.

With the recapitulation , Wilde recorded a fast up-tempo version of Cambodia .

Musically, the song is influenced by New Wave and Synthpop music. Cambodia also contains influences from electronic music , like the other songs on their debut album.

The song is about a woman whose partner is stationed as a military pilot in Thailand . One day it is ordered by Cambodia (Engl. Cambodia ) fly from where he does not come back. The lyrics were inspired by the partially secret bombing of Cambodia during the Vietnam War (1964–1975) (see Operation MENU ).

Numerous bands of different styles released cover versions of Cambodia , including the Swedish doom metal band Enigmatic , the Trance - DJ Pulsedriver , the future pop band Apoptygma Berzerk , Hearse ( Melodic Death Metal ), Scooter ( Eurodance ) and Six Pack ( Pop -Punk / punk rock ).
