Canadian Brass is a brass quintet based in Toronto , Canada .

history

The quintet was founded in 1970 by Chuck Daellenbach ( tuba ) and Gene Watts ( trombone ), who met through the Toronto Symphony Orchestra . In the course of its existence it has changed its line-up several times.

The ensemble has performed over 5000 performances and concerts worldwide, recorded more than 60 sound carriers, published a series of brass instruments from the manufacturer Yamaha Corporation under its own design and sells its own arrangements. It has received numerous prizes and awards.

Music education plays a key role in the history of Canadian Brass . During their worldwide tours, the members often pause to teach in workshops and master classes. The ensemble is chamber quintet-in-residence at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara , California .

A trademark of the quintet is the practice of performing in white sneakers in addition to the obligatory tails for chamber musicians.

Music genre

The repertoire ranges from Baroque through jazz , Dixieland , ragtime , Broadway music and standards to modern popular music . Canadian Brass creates a seamless musical arc between all styles and epochs. Numerous arrangements from all styles, commissioned and composed by members, paved the way for many more brass quintets worldwide.

criticism

“With their unbeatable mixture of virtuosity, spontaneity and humor, these gentlemen remain the lineups of concert halls, international festivals and orchestral series worldwide. Their numerous records, television appearances and their educational activities have earned them a large audience. "

- Washington Post

"[...] the stunning comedy, which in many examples [...] paraded scenically / musically in rich euphony, transformed the Kurhaussaal into a cauldron - applause and cheers for this special class concert with the excellent wind quintet did not want to end, encores."
