The 1977 Canadian Open was a professional, non-ranking snooker tournament for the 1977/78 season . They were held from August 17 to September 5, 1977 as part of the Canadian National Exhibition in the Canadian metropolis of Toronto . In a new edition of the final of the previous year, the Northern Irishman Alex Higgins reciprocated the previous year's winner John Spencer , with Higgins winning the tournament for the second time. Spencer played the highest break of the tournament with a 146 break, where he only missed a maximum break by a pink ball instead of a black ball .
Prize money
Compared to last year, the value of the prize pool increased by approximately £ 3,000 to £ 7,154, with about half going to the winner.

Tournament course
For the first time in the history of the tournament, number one in the world rankings, Welshman Ray Reardon , took part in the tournament. The composition of the field of participants also changed, instead of eight professionals and eight amateur players this time nine professionals and seven amateurs for the tournament victory. The tournament was played in the best of 17 frames mode up to and including the semi-finals , only the final took place in the best of 33 frames mode .
