Canal Point is a census-designated place (CDP) in Palm Beach County in the US state of Florida with 367 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Canal Point is located on the southeastern shore of Lake Okeechobe and borders directly on the city of Pahokee in the southwest . The CDP is located approximately 60 km west of West Palm Beach and is crossed by US Highway 98 ( SR 15 ) and Florida State Road 700 .
history
In 1947 a branch of the Florida East Coast Railway was opened from Fort Pierce via Canal Point to Lake Harbor .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 367 inhabitants were distributed over 154 households. The population density was 91.8 inh / km². 71.1% of the population described themselves as white , 20.2% as African American and 0.3% as Indian . 6.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.5% to several ethnic groups. 29.7% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 34.5% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 31.0% of all households. 63.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.24.
28.9% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 22.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39 years. 51.2% of the population were male and 48.8% were female.
The median annual income was $ 25,500, with 44.0% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 65.00% of the population and 35.00% spoke Spanish .

On May 24, 1973, Big Mound City was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .
