Candace Bushnell

Candace Bushnell (born December 1, 1958 in Glastonbury , Connecticut , United States ) is an American writer and columnist . She gained particular fame through her book Sex and the City , which - very freely - forms the basis of the television series of the same name .

Life

Bushnell grew up in Glastonbury and moved to New York City at the age of 19 . She graduated from Rice University and New York University . At the age of 19 she sold a children's book story to Simon & Schuster, but it was never published. She initially worked as a freelancer for various newspapers and wrote humorous pieces about women, their relationships and dates. In 1993 she began writing for The New York Observer . There she created the column Sex and the City in November 1994 , which was published for two years. The column was sold to HBO as a book in 1995 and as a television series in 1996 . Bushnell was married to former New York City Ballet dancer Charles Askegard from 2002 to 2012 .
