Cangrande II della Scala
Cangrande II. Della Scala (* June 8, 1332 ; † December 14, 1359 ) from the Scaliger family was Lord of Verona as the successor to his uncle Alberto II. Della Scala since his death in 1352. He was the eldest son of Albertos Co-regent Mastino II della Scala .
Cangrande II was a cruel and suspicious tyrant who tried to distance himself from his own subjects and also surrounded himself with German mercenaries. He initiated the construction of the Castelvecchio , a fortress and residence in Verona, which was completed in 1356. From there he could only rule for 3 years, since he was killed in 1359 by his brother Cansignorio della Scala . The grave of Cangrande II is located at the Scaliger tombs in Verona.
After the death of Cangrande II and Cansignorio, rule over Verona passed to their brothers Alboino II della Scala . This first fratricide was followed by more, until the people of Verona rose against their rulers with the help of the Milanese .
One year before he took office, Cangrande II married Elisabeth of Bavaria († August 2, 1402 ) on November 22, 1350 , a daughter of Emperor Ludwig IV.
