occupation

Caprica is an American television series . She is a prequel to the science fiction series Battlestar Galactica .

action

The series takes place 58 years before the events depicted in Battlestar Galactica . The place of the action is the planet Caprica , one of twelve colonial worlds of a fictional human civilization 150,000 years before our present. In addition to family dramas, economic intrigues and religious tensions, the series depicts the development of the Cylons, a cybernetic form of life that was originally developed as a combat robot and which later rebelled against its builder.

production

The series was first broadcast on January 22, 2010 by US television station Syfy in the 2009/10 season. For the first season, 18 episodes were produced. The pilot film and eight other episodes were broadcast until March 26, 2010. Another four episodes were broadcast from October 5, 2010. At the end of October, Syfy Caprica discontinued due to a lack of viewership, the last five episodes not yet aired were shown on January 4, 2011 as a 5-hour special in a row. The problem with the series is that the Battlestar Galactica fans could not be convinced by Caprica . The Canadian television station Space , on which the episodes were broadcast parallel to Syfy, followed the original schedule and also showed the last episodes on the announced dates.

At the beginning of the official broadcast, a slightly modified pilot film was released on Syfy, which was expanded to include complex visual effects and in which erotic scenes were defused.

The German free TV premiere took place on June 12, 2014 on Tele 5 .

Narrative style

Caprica retains a similar narrative style to the mother series Battlestar Galactica itself. However, the story is less action-oriented and is mainly dedicated to the character drama and the detailed representation of a science fiction world. In addition, the Adama family is partly about a mafia story in the style of the film The Godfather and generally about social taboos.

design

The production design of the series is striking. As with Battlestar Galactica , advanced technology (such as interplanetary traffic and a networked society) are mixed with certain “old-fashioned” stylistic elements: clothing and the architectural style of public buildings appear to be strongly influenced by the style of the 1930s to 1950s. Aviation ( zeppelins ) and automobile traffic are also being equipped with vehicles from the middle of the 20th century (American and above all European car models from the 1960s and 1970s can be seen) in order to achieve an alienation effect and at the same time distance from the later settled Battlestar Galactica series .

Episode list

No German episode titles were given. The episodes were broadcast with their original English title.

DVD release

An expanded version of the pilot including extras such as audio commentary, video blogs and cut scenes was released on DVD worldwide on April 21, 2009 . Universal Studios Home Entertainment justifies the period of one year between the release of the pilot film and the first season with the fact that, among other things, they want to enable fans to give their first feedback to the makers of the series before the film is made.
