Cara Buono (born March 1, 1974 in Bronx , New York City ) is an American actress . She was best known for starring Karen Wheeler in the original Netflix series Stranger Things .

Life

Buono grew up as one of four children of a working class family in the New York borough of Bronx. She got into acting through an audition for Harvey Fierstein's play Spook House . The 1.65 m tall actress made her first television appearances in the series Dream Street (1989) and CBS Schoolbreak Special (1991). At this time, Buono also began studying at Columbia University . After three years, she graduated in English and Political Science in 1993. In the following years she appeared in supporting roles in various films, including Let's Do It Like Cowboys (1994) and Hulk (2003), as well as in guest roles in numerous series. Buono also played some leading roles in independent films such as River Red (1998) and Attention Shoppers (2000).

In 2004, Buono received a lead role in the sixth and final season of Third Watch - Bet at the Limit as paramedic Grace Foster . She then appeared in the sixth season of The Sopranos as Kelli Moltisanti and in the sixth season of Dead Zone (2007) as Sheriff Anna Turner . For her guest role as Faye Miller in the fourth season of the series Mad Men , Buono was nominated for a Primetime Emmy in 2011 . She had guest appearances in the series Castle , Good Wife and Elementary . In the fourth season of the series Person of Interest , Buono played the recurring role of Martine Rousseau . Since 2016, Buono has played the lead role of Karen Wheeler in the Netflix series Stranger Things .

Buono was already working behind the camera: in 1997 she wrote the short film Baggage and also directed it. The film's actors included Minnie Driver and Liev Schreiber . She was also co-producer of the romantic comedy Two Ninas (2001), in which she also played a supporting role.

The actress has been married to Peter Thum, a social entrepreneur and founder of Ethos Water , since July 2009 .
