Carl Dahlhaus (born June 10, 1928 in Hanover , † March 13, 1989 in Berlin ) was a German musicologist .

Life

Dahlhaus first studied law and later musicology at the Universities of Göttingen and Freiburg im Breisgau ; Joachim Kaiser and Rudolf Stephan were among his fellow students in Göttingen . He received his doctorate in Göttingen in 1953 with a thesis on the masses by Josquin des Prés . After working as a dramaturge from 1950 to 1958 at the Deutsches Theater Göttingen under Heinz Hilpert and from 1960 to 1962 as editor of the Stuttgarter Zeitung , he turned to research. From 1962 to 1966 he was clerk for regional musical research at the University of Kiel . There he completed his habilitation with studies on the origin of harmonic tonality . From 1967 he held a chair for music history at the Technical University of Berlin .

In addition to the history of music in the 19th and 20th centuries, his main areas of work were musical aesthetics and music theory . He was the author and editor of numerous, mostly encyclopedic works, such as the New Handbook of Musicology, as well as editor of the Richard Wagner Complete Edition and co-editor of Piper's Encyclopedia of Music Theater .

Carl Dahlhaus was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1985 . He was a member of the order Pour le mérite for sciences and arts and the German Academy for Language and Poetry . In 1987 he received the Frankfurt Music Prize . Dahlhaus was unable to take up the research grant he was awarded at the Historical College in Munich for the college year 1988/1989 for health reasons.
