Carl Joest (born July 18, 1858 in Cologne , † May 9, 1942 in Riegsee ), actually Carl August Joest , was a German manor owner, entrepreneur and politician.

Life and family

As the son of the sugar industrialist August Joest and the maternal grandson of the banker August Camphausen , Joest attended the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Cologne and studied law at the University of Heidelberg (member of the Corps Rhenania ) and then completed a commercial training. In 1888 he acquired Eichholz Castle near Wesseling and became the founder and first entails master of the Eichholz House, which was rebuilt and expanded in 1908. From 1888 to 1936 he was a member of the district council in Bonn almost continuously. In 1904 he became a member of the district committee. Joest was also a member of the Presidium of the Agricultural Association for Rhenish Prussia and a member of the board of the Chamber of Agriculture for the Rhine Province. He was also active as a co-founder and shareholder of the Rheinische Handeï-Plantagen-Gesellschaft , which operated plantations in German East Africa .

Joest distinguished himself as a patron and donor of public institutions and was chairman of the association for the promotion of the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum , which was largely based on the collections of his cousin Wilhelm Joest .

In 1891 he married Pauline Marie, b. Pfeifer (1872–1953), daughter of the sugar manufacturer Valentin Pfeifer ( Pfeifer & Langen ). The marriage had four children: August Carl (* 1892), Eleonore Hedwig (* 1894), Ilse Juliane Carlotta Elisabeth (* 1898) and Valentine Huberta Alexandra Else Viktoria (* 1905). From 1907 to 1941, Carl was a member of the management committee and the supervisory board during the company’s time at Pfeifer & Langen.

Carl Joest died on May 9, 1942 in Riegsee near Murnau and was buried in the family crypt at the Melatenfriedhof in Cologne.

Awards

In August 1912 Joest was raised to the Prussian nobility .
