Life

His silk thread factory in Freiburg, inherited from his father, was known for the social institutions introduced by Mez, such as workers' houses, bathing establishments and factory savings banks. Mez started his activity with reference to his religion. The company was bought by the Scottish competitor J. & P. Coats in 1930 . From then on, the two companies operated as Mez AG .

From 1834 to 1849 and again from 1863 Mez was a city councilor in Freiburg, where he founded the Evangelical Monastery and provided it with considerable financial resources.

From May 1848 to June 1849 Mez was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly as a member of Villingen . From 1843 to 1849 he was also represented in the second chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly. He was of a radical democratic disposition and, as a debate speaker, dealt primarily with social issues. Although Mez refused to participate in the Brentano government during the Baden Revolution , he was no longer able to be politically active for more than a decade. In later years he joined the Moravian Church and had numerous contacts with famous spirits of the time.
