Carl von Rabenhaupt

Carl von Rabenhaupt (born January 6, 1602 in Bohemia ; † August 12, 1675 in Coevorden ), Baron von Sucha , heir to Lichtenburg and Tremoschnitz , Herr zu Crumbach supported the Groningers in the resistance against Bernhard von Galen during the siege of Groningen in 1672.

Life

Carl Rabenhaupt came from the important Bohemian noble family of Robenhaupt von Sucha (Robmhap ze Suché). He was brought up in the teaching of the Hussites . First he took part in the defense of Bautzen in Lusatia under Johann Georg von Sachsen . In 1622 he came to the Dutch Republic as the companion of Count Peter Ernst II von Mansfeld and distinguished himself at the siege of Groenlo (1627) and was made a lieutenant . During the Thirty Years' War he was in the Hessian service of Wilhelm V for a long time . In 1641 he was appointed governor of Kalkar .

Peter Ernst II von Mansfeld

On March 7, 1671 he became a colonel and was given command of a regiment. Before the “disaster year” of 1672, he was hired by the Dutch Republic to defend the city of Groningen for 4,000 thalers . On March 31, 1672 he was promoted to lieutenant general.

The siege of the city began on July 21 and lasted five weeks, during which time some 5,000 bombs and smelly pots found their way into the southern half of the city. Wilhelm von Fürstenberg and Christoph Bernhard von Galen - popularly known as Bommen Berend ("Bomb Bernhard") - retired on August 28, 1672, which is still celebrated every year in Groningen today ("Groningens ontzet"). In a bold attempt he succeeded in recapturing the strong Coevorden across the frozen marshes and moats , with the valuable Munster heavy artillery falling into his hands. Rabenhaupt was appointed Mayor of Groningen , and on January 4, 1673, Drost of Drenthe and Governor of Coevorden. But then he failed to take the Ommerschanz , which would not have been difficult and would have increased his fame considerably.

Plan by Coevorden in 1647

He liberated Nieuweschans on July 22, 1673 . In October 1673 he moved to Coevorden again when the Prince-Bishop of Galen had the Vechte dammed with a tremendous amount of work in order to flood the city. At the beginning of April 1674 he moved to Nordhorn and Neuenhaus in the county of Bentheim . Dietrich Hermann von Nagel was thrown back from Schüttorf . His final destination was the Grave , which was occupied by the French army . But he died and was buried on September 3, 1675 in the church of Coevorden.

In Veldhausen , where his campaign against Von Galen in 1673/74 ended, a street is named after him; also in Groningen . His bust , created by Willem Valk (1886–1973) and erected in 1971, is on the north side of the town hall on the Groningen Great Market, not far from a house where he lived at the time.
