Carlos "Carlitos" del Puerto, junior (born May 21, 1975 in Cayo Hueso in Havana ) is a Cuban jazz musician ( double bass , bass guitar ).

Del Puerto is the son of bassist Carlos del Puerto , a founding member of the Irakere group and author of The True Cuban Bass . He was initially looked after by his father and then began studying music as a cellist at the Alejandro Garcia Caturla Conservatory . It was not until he was 14 that he switched to bass. Then he attended the Esquela Nacional de Arte in Havana, where he received the title of Professor of Double Bass and Ensemble Performance . At the age of 17 he was honored as the best young musician at the International Jazz Festival in Havana in 1992 .

Del Puerto used a video of his performance there to win a scholarship to the University of Southern California . After arriving in the United States, it was eight years before he was so well known that he accompanied musicians such as Steve Lukather , Bruce Springsteen , Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock ; he also worked for Quincy Jones . Tom Lord recorded 31 jazz recordings between 1990 and 2017. In 2019 he was part of Chick Corea's Spanish Heart Band , with which he received a Grammy for the album Antidote .
