Carlo D'Este

Carlo D'Este (* 1936 in Oakland ) is an American military historian and non-fiction author.

He studied at the New Mexico Military Institute, at Norwich University with a bachelor's degree magna cum laude in 1958 and at the University of Richmond with a master's degree in 1974 and the University of London.

D'Este was in the US Army until 1978, most recently as Lieutenant Colonel, and served in Vietnam and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star (with oak leaves), the Legion of Merit and the Meritous Service Medal while on active duty . From the late 1970s he was a military historian and biographer. He was a lecturer at the School of Advanced Military Studies at the United States Army Command and General Staff College. In 1996 he was with WEB Griffin the founder and director of the William E. Colby Military Writers Symposium at Norwich University. He lives in New Seabury , Massachusetts.

He wrote books on the Allied landings in Normandy, Sicily and at Anzio, as well as biographies of George S. Patton , Dwight D. Eisenhower (as a military) and Winston Churchill . On the 50th anniversary of the landing in Normandy and Italy, he advised Bill Clinton , who visited the former battlefields in Europe on the occasion.

In 2011 he received the Pritzker Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing . He is an honorary doctor from Norwich University.
