Carlo Naya (born August 2, 1816 in Tronzano Vercellese near Turin , † May 30, 1882 in Venice ) was one of the outstanding travel and architecture photographers of the 19th century. Less known are his portraits and his shots of everyday life in Venice. His works are particularly valuable sources on the architectural history of the city.

biography

Naya was born as Carlo Naija. He studied law in Pisa and graduated in 1840. Together with his brother Giovanni, supported by a rich legacy, he undertook extensive trips and settled briefly in Prague around 1845 . From there he went to Constantinople in 1846 , where he experimented with daguerreotypes . On his later trips, such as to Egypt , where he visited Cairo in 1876 , he was inspired by the composition of the Renaissance painters in his photos .

When his brother died in 1857, he went to Venice and opened a studio with Carlo Ponti, the publisher and dealer of engravings and optical instruments; the latter took over the sale. But the two founders fell out. In 1862 Naya received an award at the London World's Fair. Naya, who wanted to publish a collection of cityscapes in 1866, was surprised by the annexation of Veneto to Italy.

Naya opened her own studio on Procuratie Nuove and was able to move into a large studio on Riva degli Schiavoni near St. Mark's Square in 1868 . Ponti and Naya were considered the city's outstanding photographers. Naya's studio and shop were located at Piazza San Marco, no. 77 and 78bis, and at Campo San Maurizio al civico 2758. In 1869 he received another award at an exhibition in Groningen, again in Trieste and Dublin in 1872.

Naya's photographs are not only masterpieces of architectural photography, but also of portrait art. They provide insights into the society of impoverished Venice. He photographed writers for the city's illiterate people, water and cigarette butts sellers, but also representatives of the upper class. One of his students was Tomaso Filippi .

After Naya's death, his photo archive was initially continued by his widow Ida Lessiak until 1893, then, after her death, by her second husband Antonio Dal Zotto until 1918. In 1920 Osvaldo Böhm , an art collector, took over the photo collection, which was later called Turio-Böhm . It contained more than 5,000 negatives , 1,800 of which were on Venice alone. The O. Böhm Fotografo-Editore company remained in existence until around 1980. In 2008 the Biblioteca Marciana hosted a presentation for the publication of the catalog, which was published on the occasion of a retrospective. The Biblioteca Vallicelliana in Rome has an extensive collection of Naya's photos in its photo gallery.
