Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Carlos Ruiz Zafón (born September 25, 1964 in Barcelona , † June 19, 2020 in Los Angeles ) was a Spanish writer .
Life
Carlos Ruiz Zafón grew up in his hometown of Barcelona. His father was an insurance agent . He himself worked full-time in an advertising agency in Barcelona until 1994 .
He spent his school days in Sarrià at the Col.legi de Sant Ignasi , a Jesuit school with its seat in a Gothic castle made of red brick, with towers and secret passages, which, according to him, stimulated his imagination and the desire for storytelling.
At the age of 30, Ruiz Zafón immigrated to Los Angeles, where he concentrated entirely on writing . In addition to his work on novels, he worked as a screenwriter and journalist for the Spanish newspapers El País and La Vanguardia .
His first youth novel , Der Fürst des Nebels , was published as early as 1993, and more than 150,000 copies were sold during his lifetime. This was followed by two sequels and another independent youth novel.
His fifth book, The Shadow of the Wind , was published in 2001 and initially did not receive much attention in Spain, but nevertheless quickly became a bestseller and was on the Spanish bestseller lists for weeks. In Spain, Ruiz Zafón was celebrated as the literary sensation of 2002 with The Shadow of the Wind . The novel quickly became known in Germany and made it to first place on the Spiegel bestseller list . In 2004 the publication rights for the novel were sold in over 20 countries, including France, Finland, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Great Britain, Italy, Australia, Brazil, Israel, Poland, Portugal, Greece, Hungary and the USA. From La Vanguardia , a major newspaper from Barcelona, was The Shadow of the Wind elected book of 2002. At the same time, Ruiz Zafón was a guest at the Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf on a scholarship .
Ruiz Zafón was married. He died in Los Angeles in June 2020 at the age of 55 after a long period of cancer .
