Carnosauria ( Latin : meat lizards) denotes a group of Theropoda in the Dinosauria systematics.

The term was originally introduced by the German palaeontologist Friedrich von Huene , who in this group brought together practically all of the large theropods known up to that point, as well as some dinosaurs currently considered to be prosauropods . For a long time the Carnosauria were recognized as a monophyletic line of development and expanded to include many new species of especially large theropods; for this, the prosauropods were removed from the carnosaurs. In the 1980s, the families Megalosauridae , Allosauridae and Tyrannosauridae were found in this group .

While up until a few years ago all large carnivorous dinosaurs were assigned to the Carnosauria, more and more differences between the individual representatives have recently been discovered, which made it necessary to reassess the Carnosauria. The family Tyrannosauridae is now counted among the Coelurosauria . The combination of megalosaurs and allosaurids ( Allosauroidea ) in a monophyletic group is controversial and is not accepted by most experts. Therefore, a new definition of the group has recently been created, according to which Carnosauria includes all those theropods that are more closely related to Allosaurus than to birds. Currently, the Allosauroidea (Allosauridae, Sinraptoridae and Carcharodontosauridae ) and probably some basal genera belong to this group .
