Carrier Air Wing 1 (CVW-1) is an aircraft squadron of the United States Navy .
history
CVW-1 was founded on July 1, 1938. CVW-1 has been stationed on more than 20 aircraft carriers and has made over 42 deployment trips.
CVW-1 was originally the Ranger Air Group ( Ranger Squadron ) and was stationed on the aircraft carrier Ranger (CV-4) for the first few years . The carrier squadrons were then called the Carrier Air Group (CAG) . From 1943 to 1946, CAG-1 was renamed CAG-4. It took part in the North Africa Campaign and was used in both the Atlantic and Pacific . In 1944/45 the squadron flew attacks against Japan from the carriers Essex and Bunker Hill .
Between 1946 and 1957 the CVG-1 was stationed on nine different aircraft carriers, from Tarawa to Oriskany , Coral Sea , Wasp , Franklin D. Roosevelt and Midway , to the first supercarrier, Forrestal , and others. a. during the Suez Crisis (1956–1957). In 1963, Carrier Air Group 1 was renamed Carrier Air Wing 1 .
From 1959 to 1969 CVW-1 was stationed on the Franklin D. Roosevelt . Between June 1966 and February 1967, the squadron flew attacks against North Vietnam from this carrier . Only in 1962 the squadron was deployed on the Enterprise for a few months . In 1969 CVW-1 changed to the John F. Kennedy . In mid-1982, CVW-1 was assigned to America . This assignment lasted until the decommissioning of America in 1996. In April 1986, America was involved with CVW-1 in Operation El Dorado Canyon against Libya .
It was also the only association that operated in the Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations from both the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf . In August 1996, the carrier squadron 1 was transferred to the George Washington . In 1998 there was another change, this time to Harry S. Truman . In 1999 CVW-1 returned to the John F. Kennedy after 24 years and was used in the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. In 2001/02 the squadron then made a mission to the same waters with the Theodore Roosevelt . From 2003 to the end of 2012, Carrier Air Wing 1 was stationed on the oldest nuclear-powered carrier in the US Navy, the Enterprise .
The US Navy has had a fixed system for identifying squadrons or squadrons ( Visual Identification System for Naval Aircraft ) since 1945 . Initially, this consisted of geometric patterns on the tail unit. However, since these were difficult to remember or to describe, letters were introduced as early as June 1945 to distinguish the squadrons. CVG-1 was assigned the letter "T". In 1957 the individual letters were replaced by doubles. In general, the squadrons of the Atlantic Fleet have an "A" as the first letter and those of the Pacific Fleet an "N". The Carrier Air Wing 1 can be recognized by the tail code "AB". The individual squadrons of the squadron are numbered in increments of 100. Each squadron has a so-called CAG Bird , which is officially assigned to the squadron commander ( Commander, Air Group (CAG) ), but is usually not flown by him. The CAG Birds of a Carrier Air Wing can be recognized by the tactical numbers ending in “00”, which are also referred to as “Modex”.
