Carroll Ballard

Carroll Ballard (born October 14, 1937 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American film director . He grew up on Lake Tahoe and did his military service as a cameraman .

Career

He began making documentaries for American news agencies: Beyond this Winter's Wheat (1965) and Harvest (1966); the latter was nominated for an Oscar. The documentary film The Perils of Priscilla was made in 1969, Rodeo in 1970 and Norman Rockwell's World in 1972 ... An American Dream about the American painter and illustrator Norman Rockwell .

In George Lucas ' Star Wars , he was Second Unit Director and responsible for several desert scenes. In 1979, Francis Ford Coppola , a former college student at the University of California (UCLA), offered him to direct the film adaptation of Walter Farley's book The Black Stallion . The adventure film The Black Stallion was made .

In 1983, When the Wolves Howl (Never Cry Wolf) followed, a film about a researcher who lives with polar wolves. In 1986 he filmed Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker and in 1992 Wind , a sailing film about the dream of winning the America's Cup .

In 1996, Amy and the Wild Geese followed , which was nominated for an Oscar for best camera. The film tells the story of a thirteen-year-old girl who teaches a flock of wild geese to fly.
