Carsten Aschmann (born February 19, 1965 in Hanover ) is a German filmmaker , video artist , author , film editor and film producer .

Life

After graduating from the IGS Roderbruch in Hanover, Carsten Aschmann completed a basic course of German studies and philosophy at the University of Hanover . a. with Manfred Geier , for whom he also worked as a research assistant.

From 1986 to 1989 he was part of the film group "Kreaturen", which shot on Super-8 . The "Kreaturen" were one of the first to show their films in unusual locations and combine their premieres, such as B. the "Perforated Heroes", with performance and live music. Aschmann then studied art and experimental film at the Braunschweig University of Art in the film class with Birgit Hein , Wilhelm Hein and Gerhard Büttenbender. His diploma thesis The reproduction of clichés in film with special consideration of archetypes also became relevant for his film work.

From 1993 to 1997, Aschmann was a founding member of the Hanover Film Workshop Sector 16 . His main topics were workshops on music and sound design in film in collaboration with Irmin Schmidt (Can) , Peter Braatz or Dirk Schaefer. Aschmann was involved in the film culture context at the Nordstadt Film Festival or as an active member of the Lower Saxony Film and Media Office.

His films are shown at film festivals in Germany and abroad and have received several awards, e. B. German Short Film Award (2004), Rom Film Festival / CinemaXXI (2012). Ketamine - Behind the Light won the main prize of the international jury at the short film days in Oberhausen in 2009 . His films were shown at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and the Braunschweig Film Festival . In 2011 he received a grant from the Kunstfonds Bonn Foundation .

He has been writing screenplays since 2005 - primarily feature films. As a video artist, he takes part in art exhibitions. As editor and producer he worked with the machine performance group BBM , with Agnieszka Jurek, Stilluppsteypa and David Lynch .

In his first Super-8 films ("Uterus in Legoland", "Heulerfreuden", "Rendezvous"), body and sexuality, auto-eroticism and the staging of possible relationships between men and women play a major role. Aschmann has been working continuously on two cycles, the hula stream and the video diaries, since 2004 .

From the foreword to a retrospective by Carsten Aschmann by Prof. Gerhard Büttenbender: "The strong man, the seductive woman, the castrating fury or the holy and unapproachable goddess - the clichés in Aschmann's films are not broken, and this naivete thwarted the reading, that stereotypes can only be overcome through cynicism and irony. Building on this, a point of view is made possible that does not necessarily look for a drama that only too gladly needs the distinction between good and bad, and the corresponding narration. At the same time he makes films, which come from a more documentary point of view. Here he works without a topic and surrenders himself to his spontaneous side. Therefore, it is not surprising that the uncomplicated approach is very liberating , especially in the video diaries . It is finished exactly when the viewer wants the Opportunity for discussion. "
