Caryn James

Caryn A. James is an American film critic , journalist , university lecturer, and writer . Until December 2010, she was Head of Television Criticism at the New York Times .

Life

After Caryn James received her bachelor's degree , summa cum laude, from Providence College, she received her PhD in English literature from Brown University . She then worked as a freelance journalist before joining the New York Times' literary criticism in December 1984. From 1988 to 1989 she was a cultural reporter before writing film reviews from 1989 to 1995. From 1995 she focused mainly on the area of ​​television criticism before taking over the leadership in 1997.

In December 2010 she left the New York Times and became a freelance journalist. Shortly afterwards she started her own blog with James On Screen on Indiewire.com, where she continues to report on the film. In the 2011 winter semester, she became an adjunct assistant professor in the field of film studies at Columbia University .
