Casalmaggiore is a Lombard city ​​in the province of Cremona in Italy with 15,481 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located around 30 km southeast of Cremona .

history

Archaeological finds from 1970 confirm that the area was already inhabited during the Bronze Age. The city was founded by the Romans as Castra Maiora , d. H. as a military camp. Around 1000 the settlement became an Este fortress . In the 15th century the place came into Venetian possession. Under Venetian rule, Casalmaggiore was able to use its favorable geographical location to expand trade and economy. Precisely because of its strategically favorable location, it aroused the desires of its neighbors, the Duchy of Milan , Mantuas and the French and Spanish troops during the Northern Italian wars. Towards the end of the 16th century, a - temporary - Signoria of Casalmaggiore was founded. Under Austrian rule in the 18th century, the city received city rights from Maria Theresa in 1754 . After temporarily belonging to Austria, Casalmaggiore came to the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 as part of the Risorgimento .
