Casandra Damirón

Altagracia Casandra Damirón Santana (born March 12, 1919 in Barahona , † December 5, 1983 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican singer who was known in the Dominican Republic as La Soberana .

Damirón's musical talent was already evident in her childhood. In 1940 she made her debut with great success in Santo Domingo at Club Antillas accompanied by the Orquesta Antillas under the direction of the composer and pianist Luís Rivera . She henceforth worked with Rivera, who became her husband.

Since 1946 Damirón sang songs such as Cosita linda and Maldición gitana by Avelino Muñoz on La Voz Dominicana , the country’s most important radio station , which made her so popular that she was given permission to travel to Puerto Rico, Cuba and Venezuela. In 1955 she took part in the Feria de la Paz festival organized by the dictator Rafael Trujillopart. For the festival where u. a. Participating folklore groups from Canada, Germany, Mexico, Italy and Holland, she put together a dance group with which she was so successful with the audience and with Trujillo that they named her Dominican cultural ambassador. This enabled her to perform in France, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, the USA and Argentina.

In the last years of her life, Damirón devoted herself to promoting and training young folk singers and dancers. The Fundación de Artistas y Cronistas de Santo Domingo has been awarding the Premio Casandra named after it annually since 1984 .
