Centru ( Russian Центр / Zentr ) is a district of the Moldovan capital Chișinău . It is both the historical and the current city center.

The district was established as a territorial administrative unit in 1941, then under the name Lenin District. Its current name, which translates as “center”, has been borne by the city council since 1991. In the 2004 census, a total of 90,494 people lived here, around 15 percent of the total population of Chișinău.

Some of the most important institutions of the city and the Moldovan state have their headquarters in Centru. Bulevardul Ștefan cel Mare și Sfînt street is of great importance . This is where the City Hall, the Moldovan Academy of Sciences , the Ministry of Telecommunications and the Mihai Eminescu National Theater, which dates back to the National Theater of Bessarabia founded in 1920, are located. On Strada Mitropolit Varlaam is the building of the National Philharmonic, which is the home of the National Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1940, and a venue for music festivals . A children's hospital and a military memorial for those killed in the Transnistrian conflict are located in Strada Pantelimon Halippa. Another well-known traffic artery in Centru is the three-kilometer Strada Alexei Șciusev . The man-made lake Valea Morilor is also located in the district area.
