Cesar Millan (born August 27, 1969 in Culiacán , Mexico as César Felipe Millán Favela ) is an American dog trainer and author , who became known in Germany through the television series as "The Dog Whisperer".

life and career

Born in Culiacan , Sinaloa , Mexico , Millan moved to Mazatlán with his family when he was 13 . At the age of 21 he immigrated illegally to the USA, without any knowledge of English or any acquaintance there. With the support of Jada Pinkett Smith , he founded the “ Pacific Point Canine Academy ” and a few years later the “ Dog Psychology Center ”, a 8100 m² facility in Los Angeles . On September 13, 2004, his reality TV series "Der Hundeflüsterer" ( Dog Whisperer ) was broadcast for the first time on the National Geographic Channel , since July 2009 via Nat Geo Wild also in Germany and now also via Sixx . The last program in the series was first broadcast on July 7, 2012. Since 2013, there is a new series Leader of the Pack , also on Nat Geo Wild .

Millan lives in Santa Clarita . In early June 2010, his wife Ilusión Wilson Millan filed for divorce after 16 years of marriage. Cesar Millan has been in a relationship with Jahira Dar since August 2010.

criticism

Veterinarians who specialize in animal behavior, such as the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Ethology (ESVCE) and the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB), criticized Millan in 2009 for using aversive training methods. In 2012, the professional association of dog trainers and behavioral advisors requested that the Sixx program discontinue the program “Der Hundeflüsterer”. Millan works exclusively with punishment, the "treated" dogs are by no means re-socialized and sometimes represent a danger for the owners, as their reactions are absolutely unpredictable. It is to be feared that many viewers would imitate the "dog whisperer" despite the warning notices displayed before the broadcast by Sixx. During Millan's tour of Germany in 2014, he was not allowed to perform alone with dogs on stage in Lower Saxony, as he had not passed the compulsory test of competence for dog trainers in Germany .

Millan's methods are criticized, among other things, because he recommended spiked collars in his books and works with electric shocks .

Millan works on the basis of the "pack leader theory" (pack leader theory). This is empirically outdated.
