Brother Cesare Bonizzi OFMCap (* 1946 in Offanengo in the province of Cremona , Lombardy ) is an Italian Capuchin who became known as a singer and especially in 2008 as a heavy metal singer. He is also known as Frate Cesare or Fratello Metallo ("Brother Metal"), the latter was also the name of his band.

Life

Cesare Bonizzi was born in Offanengo, Italy in 1946. In 1975 he joined the Capuchins and went to the monastery. He served as a missionary in Ivory Coast . On his return in 1983 he was ordained a priest. Bonizzi has been making music since 1990, which he sees primarily as a means to an end for reflection and spiritual contemplation. He uses a wide variety of music styles from New Age to rock music .

After attending a concert by the American band Metallica , he fell in love with metal in order to express himself musically. In his own words, metal is for him "the most energetic, liveliest, deepest and truest musical language I know". With Misteri he recorded his first heavy metal album in 2008 under the name Fratello Metallo. At the end of 2009 he announced that he would no longer perform as a metal musician. He wanted to "kill" the devil who made him a celebrity. There was a risk that there would have been a falling out between Bonizzi and his bandmates as well as his fellow brothers. However, this should not mean a rejection of the musical style; According to Bonizzi, metal is “the power of music itself” and “a brother”.

Cesare Bonizzi lives in the Musocco convent, a district of Milan .

music

Bonizzi recorded a number of albums from different musical genres, but only became internationally known through his album Misteri from 2008 and his appearance as the opening act at the Italian festival Gods of Metal , the largest rock festival in the country. He himself gives Metallica and Megadeth as the main inspiration for his interpretation of heavy metal , which he calls Metrock (fusion of metal and rock). Bonizzi performed in full habit at concerts .

In the metal scene , the gesture of the devil's horns , a raised fist with an outstretched index finger and little finger, is sometimes used, in Italy also known as mano cornuta, a widespread superstitious and sometimes obscene gesture. Bonizzi, on the other hand, used the hand sign for I love you of the American Sign Language , which differs from the Mano cornuta by the outstretched thumb.
