Chad Channing (born January 31, 1967 ) is an American drummer. From 1988 he was a member of the grunge band Nirvana , but was replaced in 1990 by Dave Grohl . Since then he has played for various other bands.

Life

Since his father was a radio DJ, Chad Channing came into contact with music early on. His musical career began as a result of an accident in the sports hall in which his upper left thighbone was injured. Since he was unable to continue playing sports, his parents gave him a red bass guitar , which he quickly mastered well. After he was able to use his legs again, his parents decided to buy him a used drum kit to train his leg muscles. Soon after, he started jamming with friends, started playing in clubs, and became more and more popular in the Seattle area.

In 1987 Channing played in the band Tic-Dolly-Row, which is seen as the predecessor band of Soundgarden . At a Malfunkshun concert in 1987 he met Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic . Through Sub Pop , a regional record label , he came to Nirvana as a drummer in the same year and recorded the first album Bleach with Cobain and Novoselic in 1989 , before being replaced by Dave Grohl .

He gave his last concert with Nirvana on May 14, 1990 in Denver , followed by Dale Crover for at least eight concerts. He later joined bands like The Methodists and Television Intravenously . From 2001 he was active as a drummer for the band East Of The Equator , meanwhile he is the bass player for the band Redband . As a solo artist he recorded a demo with Jack Endino .

Act

"I like his style, it's almost drunken."
Dave Grohl in Come as you are , Michael Azzerad's Nirvana biography, when asked about Channing's style.

The two Nirvana drummers Channing and Grohl differed in many ways: Chad Channing was more technically adept, drummed a bit off the beat, used a double pedal and, to the annoyance of his two bandmates, played with little effort. This probably led u. a. to his sacking, although he recorded the recordings for the album Nevermind very powerfully and Dave Grohl replayed the drum tracks almost identically. Another problem was probably that Chad Channing wanted to hook into the band's songwriting through self-composed pieces.
