Chadschi Dimitar ( Bulgarian връх Хаджи Димитър ) is a mountain in the Balkan Mountains and is located in Bulgaria . It is 1441  m high and is located in the central part of the mountain, near the Shipka Pass , about 13 km north of the Bulgarian city of Kazanlak . Until 1942 the summit was called Busludscha (Bulgarian Бузлуджа), and it is still popularly called that today.

history

In 1868, Bulgarian rebels led by Khadji Dimitar fought against the Turkish-Ottoman rulers on the summit of the mountain . In 1891, during the annual commemoration of the death of the fallen freedom fighters, the Busludscha Congress , the constituent meeting of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Workers' Party , one of the origins of the Bulgarian Communist Party, was held here .

The inside of the monument

The Busludscha Monument is a monument in honor of the Bulgarian socialist movement. It is located right on the mountain top. It was inaugurated in 1981 for the 1300th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian state and is the largest ideologically motivated monument in the country. The construction is said to have cost the equivalent of more than US $ 7 million. Around 6000 people are said to have worked here.

Planned by the architect Georgi Stoilow , it is located on the spot where the rebel leader Khadji Dimitar fought against the Turks in 1868 and a group of socialists led by Dimitar Blagoev (founder of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Workers' Party) planned the country's socialist future in 1891 .

The structure, which resembles a UFO in its structural form , has been in a steadily deteriorating condition since the collapse of the socialist state in 1989. It is above all a victim of vandalism and willful destruction. The main reason for this is the obvious lack of interest on the part of those responsible in maintaining or protecting the structures. For some time now, access to the interior has been blocked and forbidden. In 2018 it was decided to permanently guard the building.

Appearance in pop culture

The monument can be seen in the music video Alle gegen Alle by the rap group Zugezzug Masculin . The Dutch rock band Kensington also shot parts of the video for their song Riddels inside the monument.

The monument appears in the action film Mechanic: Resurrection , but the roof of the saucer section has been replaced by a helicopter pad.

Remarks

  1. Since the founding date of the party is sometimes also given as 1891 and the monument was erected in honor of the socialist movement in Bulgaria, it is reasonable to assume that the party was founded locally in 1891 or that significant decisions were made on site in this regard.
